OK so i was starting to get really pissed off with waiting 3 weeks for my macbook, but now it has arrived and I have had a day or so with it I am SO impressed. Loving the OS, everything is so simple and elegant - not even had to look at any help files or manual yet. Got synced up with my phone calendar and contacts straight away - on my PC I first had to buy a bluetooth dongle, fiddle around getting the drivers installed right, then install nokia pc suite, get that set up, etc etc. With my Mac it all just worked a charm - same with my printer and my presonus firewire soundcard, and my novation remote sl midi controller. Brilliant!

I did have a little ttrouble getting hooked up to the wireless network. Eventually found out that putting 0X in front of the password could sort it, and lo and behold it did!

After reading all the horror stories as well, the build quality on mine seems perfect, and the glossy screen is lovely. I am running it lid closed with a 22" widescreen monitor now and it is wonderful.

Only slight problem is a couple of times the fans have cranked up to REALLY loud - they have gone down again and it is mostly silent apart from that. Slightly worrying though, I would like to use it for audio recording and it would be a bit of a bummer if that started up during recording something fairly gentle.

Overall though I'm really impressed with it - even my gf, who is not really into gadgets, is impressed with how slick it all looks.

I know there are a billion threads like this but i thought I would post another cos I was almost put off by all the threads where ppl talk about problems.

I just got my macbook as well and I love the thing. Don't listen to peoples stories about cosmetic issues. As long as mine comes in working order and cosmetically is decent then im happy. My fans spin up to about 5000 rpm when im pushing my machine. But i'd rather have them loud and keeping the thing cool then to have overheating problems. Congrats on your new purchase.

Yea, I'ma first time mac user as well. I just bought my 17" MBP yesterday. It's awesome. The glossy screeen is amazing. And that's funny, cuz my fan did the same thing once, the very first time the computer loaded up and I was going through Setup Assistant. But it went away after a couple seconds and I haven't heard it since. I love it! It's sooooooooooooo much more user-friendly than a PC. Just like you, I have yet to look at the manual. Everything is so easy. I can't believe I've been a PC user this whole time.

Your post has made me even more excited. I just need to wait about one more week until I can order it. Then the hair-pulling ensues until I receive it. :D

Heh - these forums are not the best survey to get an impression of what a quality machine the MacBook is. Mac users are just more complainy :p

IMHO my MacBook is the best computer I've used. I'm super-impressed with the build quality.

But yeah, the MacBook's fans definitely do crank up with heavy use. If you mostly use it closed with external display anyway, then maybe you can put the MacBook on one of those laptop-cooling pads.

Cheers folks! I am now officially part of the cult and have adopted the smug manner of the mac user ;)

Yeah i think i will try with my gf's cooling pad - seems to make a real difference for hers and is def quieter than the full blast fans on the Macbook.
