Well after much debating as to whether to jump ship from iOS to android I finally took the plunge yesterday and ditched my iPhone 5 and bought a galaxy S5. After being on iOS for some 4 years I was starting to get bored of the whole experience and just fancied a change I guess.

My main concern over the change were the hassle of transferring all data etc and how I would get along with android in general. Well I didn't need to worry, Samsung has an app that transferred over all data from my iPhone including contacts, music, pictures, call logs, memos etc seamlessly.

I know it's very early days yet but I think I'm going to like it. I must admit the whole layout of home screens and widgets is quite different and will take some getting used to but I'm going to give it time and be patient!

So far here are my thoughts,

Apps - apart from minor tweaks in layout they generally work the same as on my iPhone. However, one bonus seems to be that all the apps I paid for on iOS have so far been free on android!
Phone itself - simply not the same premium build as the iPhone end of. But neither is it bad, the larger 5.1 inch screen is great and the display appears to be much better than my iPhone. The removable SD card is great, I upgraded 16gb of memory for £10, something which would have cost upwards of £60+ with apple.

Kit kat OS - very early days. Seems sharp so far with no lags. I can't believe how customisable this phone is. After years of being locked into apple and basically them dictating what you can and can't do its a welcome change. You can literally just get lost in the whole OS with the settings because there's so much you can do.

Camera - not had a real chance to test this out but the pictures taken so far are very good, a noticeable improvement on my iPhone and the actual settings and options make it more like a traditional compact camera.

So there are my brief thoughts. I know the iPhone 6 is just weeks away but the dire battery life on my iPhone 5 just finally broke me and I wanted to test the water with android. I'm not saying that I will never go back to apple because who knows I may get bored of android but I just get the feeling that apart from a slightly bigger screen and some minor tweaks with iOS it will be much of the same and I hope to be proved wrong.

After being with iOS for so long the openness of Android is a welcome surprise.

Welcome to the other side, I'm sure you'll like it

Wow, bad timing. Like you said, not only do we have the best iPhone yet just weeks away but iOS 8 with some great major changes is too. Should have waited.

I did try! But I couldn't cope with the charging the battery 2 or 3 times a day and just got bored of iOS and wanted to try out android. I just hope Apple bring something good to the table as I think they were playing catch up.

Welcome to Freedom!
Thanks

Absolutely! I forgot what it was like to be able to save simple documents in a file and then forward them and attach them to emails. Everything just seems so open and customisable!

Have to say that the finger print scanner is more miss than hit. I've had to disable it as it just wasn't registering.

I was in your spot in May, there are many things to like in Android. My reasons is that even thought the new iPhone will be out shortly, still some shortcomings. Like you I refuse to say I will never go back but I can wait a bit before I do. I want to compare iOS 8 and Android L Still have an iPad so when I get lonely for iOS I can use that. Interesting enough, with the bigger screen I go to it less and less.

Galaxy S5 is a pretty terrible Android device. If you were looking to make the switch there are FAR better options.

I'm still solidering on with mine. When I first used it I thought it was rubbish and was getting ready to disable it. However after a few days I kind of got used to it. I learnt how to use it. I guess it works on the first try about 7/10 times. If not it usually works on the second or third try.

It doesn't sound like you were much into your iPhone anyway.

Choice is great!

I personally hated Android, tried it twice and ran screaming back to iOS both times.... but its good to see there is something for everyone out there. keeps these companies honest and innovative.

On the contrary. I was mildly invested in iOS with ipads, ipods and iphones. I like to tinker around with settings etc and that was very difficult with the limitations of iOS.

I guess it does. Wouldn't want these big companies becoming complacent and taking their customers for
granted!

How can someone hate a mobile OS?

Things are getting too serious....

Exactly the same reasons for me except I went from iPhone 5 to Windows Phone 8.1. And I did not trust Apple to significantly improve battery life on iPhone. 6 so I made the jump.

While I am not a fan if Touchwiz or some of the gimmicky software Samsung adds on, Samsung have made very good hardware and I do like the fact that they allow for things like removable batteries, led notifications, stylus input, and SD cards.

Good luck and enjoy your new phone freedom.

Agree, their hardware is the best all-round, for sure.

I've also forgotten how useful a simple led notification is. It's nice to be able just to glance at the phone on a worktop from a distance and instantly know whether or not I've got a notification.
