Finally upgraded to Mavericks.. Bad idea.

I purposely waited awhile to upgrade to Mavericks so all the bugs would be sorted out. I felt enough time had passed to do so, so I upgraded and I'm getting terrible results...

My computer is extremely laggy now, even idle with no applications running. Finder is extremely slow, etc. I did a quick search and people were suggesting to look at my activity monitor to see if Finder was running at a high CPU %, but it wasn't.

2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
64GB 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048MB
Samsung EVO 1TB SSD
Areca 1223X Raid Controller Mini-SAS
SansDigital 8 Bay TowerRaid w/ WD RE4 2TB HDDs
 
I always test with test partition first.

However your problem sounds unusual.

Are you looking at "All Processes"?

i tested it on my macbook pro awhile ago and everything was perfect, that's why I didn't bother testing it out like that first. I'm running to the studio later today so I'll check all processes to see if anything is eating all my resources.
 
Keep in mind that Mavericks re-indexes Spotlight after the install, so mine was laggy for a while as well. My 2008 dual-2.8 Mac Pro is doing pretty well now, aside from the beachball blips and crackling audio. The fact that I've been running Photoshop CS6 for a day and the OS hasn't drifted into swap at all was worth the upgrade alone. The RAM management is unbelievably better.

interesting, perhaps it was taking forever to re-index everything. I checked my spotlight to see if it said it was doing it (that was my first guess) but nothing showed up.

Well, actually I just kind of assumed that because mdworker was going crazy for a while. Hopefully yours will settle down. You might also check to see that all your 3rd-party utilities are Mavericks compatible, or things like Wacom tablet drivers.
 
MY MBP has been booting and running kind of slow too.
I fixed permissions and reselected the START drive and it didn't seem to help either.
I am hoping a future patch will speed it up again.
 
Immediately after install you can Option+Click Spotlight in the menu bar and it says Reindexing with a calculated time to finish.
I just Mavs 10.9.2 on a 2007 20" iMac and it's running fine.

No lag except when waking from sleep but it is running on a 1TB HDD, maxed RAM to 6GB but in average everyday tasks such as web surfing, music, etc there's no jittering or jumping. I also always do clean installs so as not to carry any gremlins to a new OS upgrade.

This right here. If it doesn't improve, try restarting your Mac while holding Cmd-R, and reinstall Mavericks.

Worked for me.

It seems to be working a lot smoother today.. I guess it was just indexing in the background without me knowing.

Now seems like a particularly odd time to go for it. 10.9.1 is the latest version and was released back in mid-December, and 10.9.2 seems like it's just around the corner. If you're willing to wait this long, why not wait until the next point-release? :confused:

i wasn't really paying attention to the releases to be completely honest.
