I am so excited that we finally get IP68 ( 2 meters which is 6 feet I believe) on the new iPhone XS and XS Max. I pre ordered the Gold Max at 3:01am Eastern Time, so I get mine on launch day, but sadly I will be sending back a iPhone X that is a replacement Apple sent me 3 weeks ago when I accidentally dropped my first one in water, That IP68 is coming 3 weeks to late for me hahaha.

I am excited though to get a phone that is closer to "water proof". This time in the Keynote they even show the phone at the bottom of a pool!! lol

Interesting how the XS/XS Max have IP 68, yet the XR has IP 67. Ah well, at least IP 67 exists to protect against dropping a phone in a puddle or something of the sorts.

What I don't quite understand is that the Xs is rated for IP68, but if for some reason some water gets in, it's basically 'sucks to be you' from Apple since the warranty does not cover any kind of water damage at all, right?

People would abuse it. They would swim with it in their pockets for long periods of time, water ski with it, water slides etc. Then when it doesn’t work the story would be “ I dropped it in 2 inches of water. It was only in there for 5 seconds”. They claim it’s water resistant. Resistant is not proof.

People will try to abuse everything. But to market the device as being able to do something, but then say, well if it isn't actually able to do that, 'sucks to be you,' seems pretty weak. It's also hilarious to say it can handle 2m at 30 minutes, and then compare it to 'everyday spills'.

"iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max reach a new level of splash and water resistance of IP68 for up to 2 meters for 30 minutes and protect against everyday spills including coffee, tea and soda."

Form my understanding, ip68 is up to 13ft. May be up to the manufactures depth though.

Because their would be no way to prove how much abuse it took.

Most devices that have this degree (or more) of water resistance will warranty for defects, etc. This allows one to at least try and prove the failure was not from abuse but from a product failure. Apple appears to not even allow that by explicitly saying they won't cover water damage. That's disappointing.

They aren’t going to cover it, because the ip68 does have restrictions. And there is no way to find out if an incident with a phone was within those restrictions or not. I’m assuming that’s why they just advertise it as every day spills as well. I was surprised when they advertised the apple watches for any kind of swimming for the fact that they have no way to figure out if potential water damage was caused from use within the parameters of what was advertised.

Instead of everyone complaining about it not being covered, can’t we all just be thankful that there is at least some form of water resistance in place?

Given that Apple bought a company years ago that can waterproof electronics, IP68 from Apple does not represent any kind achievement. Its a gimmick.

What does the warranty say about this protection and what Apple will or wont do?

Love how the chart says 'permanent' submersion (yeah, the 13 feet (about four meters) may be variable by manufacturer...).

Permanent? That assumes no pressure jets, just static water pressure, but good grief. That means when the phone is reassembled after service (if ever), they do a dang good job!

So - based on that chart - would IP66 be the best? Wouldn't something that can withstand a powerful water jet also be able to withstand immersion?

Hi phone that I know of, with IP68 rating will warranty their phone if the water detection inside is tripped.
And also, IP68 does not specify “2 meters of submersion for 30 mins after dropped into the water”. You all should look at the testing procedure for IP ratings. Lastly be aware that the rating declines over time because the water resistance components (seals for instance) degrade over time and with use.

Negative. Higher secondary digit is 'better' in regards to water protection.

So - based on that chart - would IP66 be the best? Wouldn't something that can withstand a powerful water jet also be able to withstand immersion?

So who will be brave enough to be the first to video film 2meters underwater and test out the IP68 rating?
