I was was given a 2017 iMac (part of design work I did trade).
It had a cracked lcd. But it also had Apple Care so Apple repaired that for a $99 "incident fee", but we also found a efi firmware lock, the owner (he was not the original imac owner) gave me a copy of the original receipt, so they removed it no problem. When I got it home and plugged it in I watched it being remote erased via Find My Mac. And now has an Activation lock.
So I contacted Apple again, sent the receipt and am awaiting a response. And here is the rub, it was reported lost not stolen. The police said I turn it in, but no reports of lost or stolen iMac in my area. I went to the Apple site and it just lists the verified purchase date, active Apple Care for 8 more months.
Apple can't help (again only reported lost), won't give me the original owners info (it is marked out mostly on my copy of the receipt, a local address, I have called the number, disconnected, went to the address, a rental, so no luck there. And sent a letter a month ago, returned, undeliverable, (was hoping it would get forwarded).
Since the iMac is now wiped, can't retrieve anything off it (understandable).
The store where it was sold, can't/won't give me any info (again understandable).
And according to Apple I am the first and only registered owner, so weird.
So my question is, any ideas as to how or whom I can contact to try and return this iMac? If they can't/won't give me the info, maybe contact them themselves.
Having had an iMac stolen a few years back, I would have loved if someone made an attempt to return it.
I mean even if Apple refuses to undo the lock, I can sell the parts (brand new screen), but it just rankles me, that someone is missing a $1500+ machine and nothing to be done.
Weird request so thanks in advance.

You may have a good reason not to, but I'd be contacting the person for whom I did the design work…to give it back and ask for something of value instead.

You're out the $99, of course, as Apple's repair center probably isn't aware of activation locks pending on any machine until they happen. I think what happened to you could happen to anyone getting a used Mac. The person that reported it "lost" probably had the option to choose between that and "stolen" when setting up the remote wipe/activation lock.

Another option, if you could get a buyer to understand the situation, would be to sell it for parts.

The guy I traded from, it was basically a gimmie above my fee. So not a big deal there. I am not worried so much about the money, the screen alone would at a minimum, double or triple cover my $99 cost.
I am mostly interested in trying to get it back to the original owner.
Since the iMac firmware lock was removed by Apple, I believe they will also release the activation lock, since I am the "official and only registered owner" according to their, Apple records.
Thanks.

Update:
Apple can't help find the owner.
They removed Activation block for me no problem.
Running Catalina, 40GB Ram, 1TB Fusion Drive. i5
A few scratches on the back, but runs nice. Brand new screen. Everything else checks out great (yeah Apple Care and free checkup).
So I guess, wait a few months until Apple Care runs out (6mos), then upgrade to 1 or 2TB ssd, and maybe i7 7700?
