Will we be able to find our iPads, remotely erase and lock them with MobileMe? The 3G ones I mean. That would be nice.

I don't see why there wouldn't be that capability. I'm counting on it.
Is there an app that will allow you to find your iPhone so you don't have to buy MobileMe?

I don't see why not. After all the iPad is just a large iPod Touch... hence the disappointment from everyone after it's debut.

Nevertheless I am getting the wifi one on Sat.

The 3g radio may not be on at all times, especially if you are not currently paying for it. We'll find out soon.

Good point! You will have to have your 3g account activated for what ever amount you choose. I think the GPS will work even without an active account but we shall see.

I am sure GPS will still work.
If it didn't, all a thief would have to do is pop out the SIM card and voila- nobody could track the phone.

We shall see. I don't have an iPhone so I can't test if removing the SIM affects that. I hope that disabling "Find my iPhone" is not so easy as removing the SIM ..

I do believe it is as easy as that. You can also put the iPhone in Air Plane mode to make it "invisible." However, if you have WiFi turned on, it sometimes can be located. iPod Touches can be located with Find my iPhone if they are near a known WiFi hotspot. I expect this to work for WiFi-only iPads also.

Will MobileMe eventually have a "Find My iPad" service for iPad 3G?

Just curious if this will play out from the folks at MobileMe. I don't see why this would be a huge problem considering the built-in GPS and 3G radio.

On another note, it would be interesting to see if an iPhone app will be developed to locate your iPad from the handset if lost or stolen. The iPhone app for locating the iPad would deliver the same features when locating the handset from a desktop/laptop computer - the ability to lock the device, clear all data, send a message, and so forth. Conversely, if the iPhone is lost or stolen, one could simply log on to me.com from the iPad and proceed as they would when at a desktop/laptop computer.

Any thoughts?
