Find my iPhone and air pods

Not sure if this is how it’s supposed to work or there’s something wrong with my set but I noticed today that the “Find my iPhone” app doesn’t work for finding your air pods if they are both inside the charging case and all three items are what is missing.

like my AirPods always show that they are still at my gym because that was the last place I used them, even though they are in my hands. If I open the case, they re-sync and show as being located in my home again.

another example: my friend lost hers in her home. But can’t use find my iPhone to play a sound because it’s not connected (and needs the lid to be opened to connect)

Is there something I'm missing here? Or does find my iphone really only work when the AirPods are outside of the charging case and you have the case in hand?

Darn... so there’s no way to find a lost AirPod case... only the AirPods themselves.
Seems a little pointless since the only time I would misplace them is when they are in their charging case!

You can only use the "Find My" to track your missing Airpod. There is no other options for that.
But you can replace it by collecting the serial number and connect with the apple support.

Unfortunately the situation here is that the AirPods (in their charging case) were set down somewhere in the house and now they can’t be found anywhere!
