I tried yesterday to install Find My iPhone on my wife's iPhone 4 with iOS 6 and could not do this because the App Store said that for this app iOS 7 would be necessary. However, I do have this app on my iPad 3 with iOS 6 and it works perfectly fine.

Can it be true that Apple prevents people with iOS 6 on their devices to get Find My iPhone functionality, or this there a way to get this installed on such machines?

I have the Find My iPhone app installed on both my iPhone 5 and 3rd gen iPad, and they are both on iOS 6.1.2. It sounds like Apple has replaced the apps in the store with the latest version of the app, which probably requires iOS 7.x. I recently tried to install a game that was free on the AppStore, and it told me that I needed to have iOS 7 on my phone.

Since you have it on your iPad already, you can connect your iPhone to the computer you sync your iPad to, and when iTunes pops up, go to your apps tab and select the Find My iPhone app to sync to your phone to have the backdated version. It should transfer once your click on Sync. If this doesn't work, you can always check online on the iCloud on a computer to use the Find My iPhone feature. Sent from my iPhone 5.

Edit: another option you could try is, on your iPhone, go to the AppStore app, go to your purchased apps, and see if you can find the app there; I assume it should be the backdated version, but I could be wrong.

It's not about my but my wife's iPhone that runs on iOS 6 and does not have Find My iPhone - and I would not know how to transfer any app from my iPad or iPhone (which are connected to my Apple ID and my Mac) to her iPhone (which is connected to her Apple ID and her Mac).

The question remains: Is it possible to install Find My iPhone on an iPhone 4 with iOS 6?

Find my iPhone on ios6

Yes it is possible, I managed to get it installed on an iPhone 4s for my mom that was running iOS 6. Since her iPhone refused to install the app natively from the app store (indicating it needed ios 7) what i did was I used my own iPhone 5s (running ios7) and logged into the App store with her Apple ID and proceeded to purchase the app. I then retuned to the iPhone 4s to the purchased section of the app store and clicked on Find my IPhone. The install will ask if you wish to install an older version of the app.
