How many times does the alarm go off when you send a message with Find My iPhone? I can see that my phone is at home but i can not find it. The ringer switch is on mute.

It will beep until the battery dies. The sound plays at full volume, even if it's set to mute.

In Find my iPhone, did you tell it to make a sound along with the message?

yes. I can also see that it refreshes with a green dot each time with < 1 min. so I assume that the battery is not dead yet.

Is the sound like a beep or more like a ring?

It's the Sonar ringtone. It plays it over and over again. Without known the size of your house; my advice, start looking before its battery dies. Maybe send it another message and double check that you tell it to play a sound along with the message.

found it outside. The find my iphone sound was not working. I did have an alarm that went off which was never dismissed. I wonder if that was masking the sonar sound.

Actually the sonar sound will only sound for about 10 minutes, though at the end of that time you can go back into Find My iPhone and have it play the sound again.

Find My iPhone has saved my behind a couple times now. :)

As near as I can tell, the igotya app that does this is NOT the one(s) on the itunes store (i.e. requires jailbrake). Is this correct?

Correct, jailbreak is required for this app.
