I just had to come here and share my story about my stolen phone and the "find my phone" feature.

Yesterday I was christmas shopping in Macy's in the mall and had to use the bathroom. I must've put my iPhone down somewhere in the stall (sorry tmi.. lol) and walked out.. I went to wash my hands and realized after drying them that I didn't have my phone. Meanwhile a man had gone into the stall after me. I waited for him to get out and asked him if he'd seen it. He said no and left... I panicked.. My mood was killed for christmas shopping and I just knew I'd have to get a new iPhone..

But... something told me to run to the Apple store. I went there and I asked them if I could use one of their computers, logged into my iCloud account and searched for my phone with the "Find My Phone" program. And there was my phone... On the map, outside the mall and driving away lol.. I watched it move away from the mall, but it eventually stopped at a nearby shopping center. So I decided to make the phone make a sound. I did it over and over again and then put it in lost mode, asking whoever had it to please return my phone to the apple store in the mall I was in. Then someone from apple gave me a phone and let me call my phone. A lady answered my phone, said she had it, and that she wouldn't meet me in the apple store, but to come meet her in Macy's and she would return it. So I ran back to Macys and found her. Crazy thing is, the lady looked like she could've been a relative to the man in the bathroom that said he hadn't seen it. I didn't say anything but "thank you" to her and left with my phone. I think it was a combination of good karma and "find my phone" being simply amazing that I got my phone back. I can truly thank apple for this.

Since having that experience, I think there are a couple things Apple should change about find my phone. When you make the phone play a sound from find my phone, is should NEVER turn off. Kind of like a home alarm. When I got home, I realized that all the person had to do was hit the power button to turn the sound off. I also think you shouldn't be able to power down the phone when it is in locked mode. You should need your password to power the phone down AND stop the sound from being played from "Find my phone"... Had the person that took my phone simply powered it down, I would not have been able to see my phone's location with Find my Phone. Or if that person just turned off the sound and I never played the sound again. Maybe that person would've just turned the sound off and kept going... Anyways, I'm glad I got my phone back!

Nice Christmas miracle!

Something similar happened to me but I was not able to retrieve my iPhone :( and I completely agree with the sound never stopping and requiring a passcode or Touch ID to turn off the phone.

Unfortunately it is required by the FCC that ANYONE be able to power down ANY mobile device of their own accord without being blocked by a passcode of any sorts, in order to prevent any potential radio interference. That is why every device with a mobile radio, be it Apple, Windows, or Android, lets you power it down from the locked screen without having to enter the passcode.

That's why that is the way it is.

I also wish Find my iPhone would add some more advanced features such as remote screenshotting, remote video/audio capture, location logs, etc. Some features like what Cerberus for Android has.

How cool will it be if when you turn on lost mode, it asks you if it's stolen or simply lost, and then the phone will only blast full volume spoken message "This phone is lost/ stolen" every single time it is turned on and both mute switch and headphones won't be registered.

And when you try to turn it off and it requires holding the power button for 15-30 seconds while both cameras continue to take photos and try to upload to iCloud.

Why didn't you just call your phone from another phone to start with, would have been much easier

My ringer was off. "Find my phone" overrides the the volume setting. By sending the sound via "find my phone", I was able to get the attention of the person that had it the phone while the ringer was off. :)

A similar thing happened to me once, and the situation was resolved in the same way. I'm glad you got your phone back!

I also got mine back when this happened to me, but to be honest losing it in the first place was totally and
unequivocally my own fault for acting a fool, and I did pay a rather handsome finders fee to the person who returned it to me. Not a thief, mind you, just someone who decided to do the right thing when so many apparently couldn't be bothered to.

To summarize: Yes, Find My iPhone really is amazing.

I hear you and same thing with me. it was totally my fault, but I do know the phone was stolen from me.. Although I shouldn't have put it down in the first place. I offered to pay the person via "Lost mode", but when it was returned, there was such a guilty look on the persons face that I just said "thank you" and kept it moving..
