I have my photos numbered 1 to 18533, yet finder says there's 18534 files in the folder.

Can anyone suggest a quick way to find the rogue file?

Probably a hidden file, such as the .DS_Store file

The .DS_Store file is the Finder's "window view settings" file. It's in every folder that you view in the finder. Won't count in a file transfer, as it stays with the folder itself - and, you can see the file by using any tip to show hidden files.

But as you can see this file does count in the file transfer, it's also recognised by the file name changing app I use, although Photos won't see it on import

Edit: I've checked for hidden files, no .DS_Store appears

Hard to say...

Try putting that folder in list view. You can change the sort by file kind. If all of your pictures are .jpg files, then you toggle the sort by kind, in list view - any odd (not a picture type) files should be apparent, and I expect it SHOULD have a distinctly different name...

Hmmm.... just a guess, but...

The file names are consecutive by number.
You have 1 (one) more file than suggested by the largest number.
Then, I suggest that you may have two files with the same sequence number (maybe one with an additional -1 in the name, automatically renamed because you have two with the same sequence number). Maybe a one-time glitch in your renaming utility
More than 18,000 files in a single folder, finding one file that's slightly different name - seems a daunting task !
