I have my brothers computer in firewire target disk mode. When I try to access the powerbooks harddrive finder keeps freezing or (not responding) on my computer. I'm very frustrated can someone please help.

Does your brothers computer start up normally by itself and get to the desktop? If there are problems with the disk I'm wondering if that could be causing your computer to stop responding.

As a matter of fact his comp is messed up and the reason I'm trying to connect is to reinstall os x.

Yeah, a failed hard drive would freeze Finder like this. :(
Ok that is bad but I have accessed it successfully before. Though it is a possibility it is damaged.

Ok I was just in firewire target disk mode and looking around in some folders and sure enough finder locks up. So I pull out the firewire cable and finder is alright. So I guess there is something wrong with my bros harddrive.

Hopefully you shutdown down your computer before you yanked out the cable..

If not, you most likely incurred further damage to it.

edit: massive misspellings

Maybe get what you can from it and then use the OSX disks to reformat (and maybe even write zeroes to) the drive. :)
Ok I will try. If anyone has any other suggestions please send them my way.
