Finder lately has been slow to initialize, showing a beachball for around 1/4 - 1/2 a minute before showing files.

Is there something I can look for to see why this happens? And maybe how to speed it up to where it used to be?

I haven't really changed anything lately. I did have a failure of the OWC Accelsior SSD card, and then their Thunderbay 8 exploded, but that's another story. Both are removed for now and should not affect this problem, I hope.

Suggestions as to how to diagnose this?

My experience (on a 16 core MP) has been that the Finder is VERY slow. No update has fixed it as of yet.
I miss the Snow Leopard days...

Parzival,

I'm working on a clue: I have a USB-connected Plugable hard drive dock. The kind I can plug a 3-1/2" hard drive into when I have one out of its housing and want to see what it contains.

I noticed the blue light was on, so I turned it off. Voila! Instant Finder.

I tried turning it back on right away, but the behavior (spinning beachball) did not reappear. I need to turn it on and reboot I guess to see if there's any more misbehavior. Maybe later today?

The only other possibility I can surmise is that the problem went away shortly after I posted it here LOL

If I can somehow duplicate the behavior I'll ad to this thread.

In the meantime, maybe you have something connected using USB? If so, try turning it off or disconnecting it.

Hi Tom,

Hope that works out for you!
I do have a USB hub, but disconnecting it unfortunately did not make a difference, my Finder is still laggy.

Parzival,

I rebooted with the disk dock turned on and then again with it off. Finder's behavior didn't change either time - it remained jiffy quick. Not sure what else to try but a happy camper even if I don't know why it's working properly again.
