I recently upgraded from OSX 10.10.5 -> 10.11.1, since then Finder has begun to crash (and restart) about once a day. The stack traces in the crash logs show crashes at a number of different locations in the Finder code. The crashes appear to be related to Finder updating its windows (and possibly its desktop content) when e.g. doing longer downloads i.e. in cases where filenames may change from xxx.part -> xxx and where the available file preview may change from a generic icon to file specific preview.

I've checked all my drives and partitions (I'm using a 2008 MacPro with 4HDs) before and after the upgrade (using DiskUtility) without finding any HD or filesystem issues.

I've googled around a bit and tried the following solutions (that have failed to solve the Finder issue):
  • remove corrupted .DS_Store files (I've removed a few likely candidates via the Terminal while booted into the recovery partition)
  • remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlist.plist (I've removed these via the Terminal while booted into the recovery partition)
I also did the OSX 10.11.1 -> 10.11.2 upgrade as I hoped that it might have fixed the Finder bug - it did not.

Are there any other things I could try ?

I would prefer not to have to do a clean install as formatting, reinstalling OSX & my apps, and configuring all my apps is a fairly time consuming process.

Reverting to 10.10 is possible (I have a backup) but I rather not as I use this mac as my development machine - running the newest OS ensures that one can run the newest version of Xcode.

Xcode still supports Yosemite too. El Capitan has a fair bit of issues, also with Finder, and it seems that you already did the usual troubleshooting. Have you submitted a bug report?

You could "overwrite" your system by downloading the El Capitan installer and installing the system again. Maybe that makes a difference. In addition, try using a new user account and see whether the problem occurs there too.

Not yet, I was hoping to either be able to reproduce the error in a consistent manner or figure out if the issue was somehow specific to my machine.
