so here's the deal... i was having some computer issues the other day, so i took my 'book over to a friend to have it checked out. along with fixing my problems, he also decided things could be 'prettier,' and he changed the way finder shows things in windows.

labels are now on the right (fine), files and folders now give me info like # of item, length of songs, etc... (fine), and folders now get added to the right instead of down (meh).

i know how the first two were done, and i have no problems with them, but this third thing is pretty weird, and i can't figure out how to change it back (and haven't had a chance to ask the person who changed it originally). the idea behind it is that the finder windows don't change size as more items are added, and you scroll L->R instead of Up->Down.

i don't really care to change this right now (seeing if i get used to it - at the moment it's just kinda disorienting), but i was wondering how i would go about changing it back if i ever desired to do so. if i have not explained it well, let me know and i will try again or include some screenies.

thanks for your help.

I am not sure I understand you correctly, but try this:

Open up the Finder Window you want to change. On top you will see 3 Buttons with the Word View under it. Click the middle button.

ok, i have not done a good job explaining.

everything is in icon view. imagine this, though:
you continuously create new folders. normally, these folders would be created left to right, then move down a row, then be created left to right again. instead, folders for me would be created top to bottom, then move right a row, then top to bottom again.
under this scenario, to go through the folders you must side-scroll instead of scrolling normally if there are more folders than there is room for in the finder window.

maybe this illustrates it better?

man. that is weird because mine never did until the other day. oh well. if anyone else has any ideas, i would love to hear. them. if not, i will just have to get used to it (it's kinda neat, i am just used to the other way, so finding some folders is kinda weird). thanks for the responses that have come so far!

sorry for the double-posing BUT...

i just fixed it. i tried switching the info from displaying on the right back to displaying on the bottom. then i closed to finder window and it was back to normal. i tried that before except for the closing the window thing, and it did not work. now when i change it, it switches back and forth without having to close the window. weirdness.

thanks again, though!!

I have found the best way to find stuff is to keep folder items organized by name or something like that. I personally have never tried the labels on the right, and I think I like it, it looks rather strange, but maybe I'll get used to it and like it, who knows! :D

I fooled around a little bit with the standard settings, and it looks like when you change the icon text to be on the right, it automatically changes the scroll behavior to be horizontal. If you change it back to putting the text below the icon, the vertical scroll behavior is restored.

Edit: Oops, someone beat me to the punch :)
