If I have a long file copy in Finder, the little box comes up showing the progress. It can be closed, also if I bring up a new Finder window to do something else, that progress box goes away in the initial Finder window - yet the copy continues. If it's gone and the copy is still in progress, how do I bring the progress window back?

This question is about copying files from one volume to another, right? I don’t think the copy window comes back. Do the file icons show the state of the copy?

In Finder Menu "Window" look for "Show Progress Window":
