Finder: slow, bad user experience

Every major release, I do a complete re-install (put the installer on an USB stick, perform backup and do a clean install), just to get a "clean sheet" and get rid of stuff I haven't touched in ages.

Navigating in the Finder is slow. Very slow. I haven't experiencing any bugs or odd behaviour, but compared to Mavericks the experience is terrible.

Opening tabs, switching between tabs, opening folders, new windows - this is notably slower than in Mavericks. I am using the keyboard a lot and it's probably due to this it's easy to spot the difference.

Safari is in general more responsive when you "compare" it in the context of clicking links, opening tabs and switching tabs.

Other file browser applications do not show the same slow behaviour.

Anyone else finding the slowness annoying?

Using a HDD by chance?


Not making excuses if you are as Finder should be usable since there are a few released today that still come with HDD stock.

I switched to SSD's in '09 and I usually do not experience the slowness and I almost never experience any spinning beach balls. Maybe 1-2 month.

I also do a repair permissions every so often, at least twice a month, usually every other weekend and this also seems to help with some slowness.

Nah, running on a MBA (2012). Very snappy in general. It's like someone poured molasses on Finder.

Yeah that's no good.

I'm the same with you in regards to just doing a fresh install with major releases.

Hopefully someone else an chime in and help.

Same here, I have a late 2013 Macbook pro but the finder is not as responsive as the Mavericks version. And I also use the keyboard a lot, so sometimes I even end up making mistakes because of this. But Windowserver is also using a lot of CPU power, I am hoping on an update soon.
