I noticed the placement of window being off recently when restarting, and now they don't appear at all after restart. I tried trashing the a couple preferences files, finder prefs, startup etc. but that didn't help. Then I reinstalled the system through recovery mode (Catalina). But still not working.

I had turned on iCloud Drive recently (not really knowing what it is) and now the Desktop shows up under iCloud Drive in a finder window sidebar, rather than directly in the hard drive/user etc as it always did. Wondering if this could be related to the problem somehow? I had done that a few months ago though, and windows behaved normally for a long time until recently.

I haven't been able to find a setting which turns on/off the Finder remembering Finder window placement or anything. Is there such a thing?

I am on a 2012 3.47 why 27" iMac, and running Catalina 10.15.7

Thanks!

I had thought about that one but hadn't tried it, didn't seem to help. But: I spoke to Apple support and he realized that there's a checkbox when you restart which asks if you want finder windows to be opened, and it was unchecked. That kind of things happens sometimes, preferences get unchecked, etc. Anyway that solved the issue. Whew. and Oy. :)
