Finding where my link is posted

hey,

Is there a way to find out where my site is posted i.e forums etc on the internet.

Im currently using alltheweb but doesnt seem to bring much back and i know links to forums that it isnt bringing back. Been using google also using "example.com" to help find it but again doesnt find everything

any suggestions/tips?

Go to Google, use the syntax:

In Google prefix your domain name or URL you want to check with "site:" and it'll show any indexed site other than yours where that stuff is linked. Same as doing an advanced search via domain. This is the right command and it works.

Also check this page out which has a free "link popularity" software tool which does the same thing as I said for many search engines, plus other cool reporting tools.

Then consider installing Google Analytics (free) to find out more about how traffic is using your site, in addition to the sources of such traffic which you might also find useful.

Checked out that link but seems only to be for Windows PC? Is there one for mac?

I do have google anylytics but when i try and look at the forums it just has the .index php not the actually post.

You man the link to the software tool where I noted it checks "other search engines" ? (which answers your last question) Sorry, I could not locate a similar freeware tool for Mac. You can install Windows XP on an Intel Mac via Parallels/VM Fusion, otherwise contact a friend with a PC as they are, well, pretty easy to find out there these days.

You mean "Google Analytics" ? Just put the Google code in all forum templates you need to see data for, or a global template if one exists, and even if you had mentioned which forum software you use honestly this is not a question best asked here as to which templates and how. You should instead go to your forum software's own technical support forum and ask there as those are the people who've been there/done that for fastest/most reliable results.

That's the way to go. If it doesn't match any documents, nobody is linking to the site. Google is never wrong and definitely finds every page.

The prefix site:http://example.com only searches through example.com.

Google doesn't list all of your backlinks with link:www.site.com. Yahoo on the other hand does and it uses the same operator. Just search link:www.your-site.com. You can also sign up for Google Webmaster Tools:

www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

Here you can see indexed links to your pages across the entire site and all see if theres any errors with your site. Check it out.

Another great tool is LinkDiagnosis.com which you can see your link profile as far as how many links are going to your site, the anchor text and the PageRank of pages that are linking to your sites. This site is more for SEO purposes but still gives you a pretty good idea of whos linking to you.

Yup thats right. But the link: operator in Google search doesn't show ALL of the links to your site. Only Google Webmaster Tools will show you all of them. In you use Yahoo with link: it will also show your entire link profile.
