FiOS G1100 vs 5th gen Airport Extreme

okay so our household has quite a busy networking setup. Our devices include 3 iPhone 6's, one Apple watch 2 iPad mini 2's 1 iPad Air 2, three apple tv's, one smart tv, three wireless printers, two MacBook pros, and two windows computers. The wireless is being served by a 5th Gen Airport extreme and the incoming connection is a FiOS 300/300 Fiber plan. We recently upgraded to Quantum TV and as a result we got the new G1100 Wireless AC router. Since we have quite a few wireless AC devices now would it be better to retire the Airport and use the Fios router alone? in the past Fios routers were crap and we used them in bridge mode with the airport taking main control. On paper the new router is pretty stout with dual band wireless AC. I know the incoming connection isn't enough to saturate the wireless N router but still the updates that AC bring to the table are enough for me to ask the question of which is better.

@satinsilverem2 Personally, I would go ahead and get yourself a new AC compliant router. ASUS makes some quality hardware and the AirPort Extreme 6th generation is another safe bet. If you prefer to stay with Apple routers, you can get a 6th generation Extreme from Apple refurbished for $129. The newest generation also allows you to use Time Machine to USB connected hard drives.

Given the cost of the Airport Extreme, limited feature set, middle of the road performance, you might want to consider another router with superior performance at the same price. Typical to the mix would be Asus and Netgear along with a few other recognized proven 802.11ac routers. Perhaps checking out the smallnetbuilder site would be of value as they test and rate the routers. As I don't know who makes the fiber router you mentioned, no comment of value.

Actually, the 6th gen Airport Extreme's performance is very very good. The downside is its limited feature set.

If you want a performance access point (that can support a mesh network) I would look at ubiquiti. Same price as a premium consumer level access point, but it has the power, flexibility and robustness of enterprise.

+1 for ubiquiti. They also just released their new line of AC access points.

I have been looking at these mostly because the gadget nerd in me thinks it is a nice setup. What are you folks using as a router with the ubiquity units?

Im using my Verizon actiontec router with my Ubiquiti access point.

I use one of the new AirPort Extreme Base Stations as a router. I just have the wireless turned off on it. It just does DHCP and NAT with no wireless. I then use the Ubiquiti controller to set an SSID and password.
