I'm pretty much over Take 2.

I would love to travel back to 1.1.

Anyone know if this can be done? My Apple TV factory reset/restore will boot me way back to 1.0. Considering the number of problems with 2.0, 1.1 is looking awfully sweet. For that matter, so is 1.0.

I'm not the retro type, but, hey, a guy can take only so much.

Anyone have any info on getting back to 1.1?

Here's what I think you'll need to do.

1. Pull your ATV hard drive and clone an image of the drive using the Awkward TV. This is essential in case you screw it up. I have my original 1.0 image stored on two separate hard drives (just in case my tinkering goes awry).

2. Re-initialize the OSBoot partition only - you don't want to damage the other partitions that contain the bootloader info. If you do, you'll need the disk image from step 1.

3. Mount the 1.1 OSBoot image from the link in my first post.

4. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to move the 1.1 OSBoot volume to your ATV's OSBoot partition.

5. Put you ATV back together, turn it on and pray...

I have no idea if this would work, but it's what I'd do.

Do you have iPartition? It might come in handy if things go bad.

Hmmm.... may be easier to buy a new one before they start shipping 2.0 on them.

Hardware is not my specialty. In either case, I can't thank you enough for the info.

Seems like a lot of trouble. You might as well just stick it out until the next update. 2.0 was such a big update they're sure to put out another before too long to clean up any residual issues...

I hope so. X <-- crossed fingers ;)

It appears as if the 1.1 preinstalled ship has sailed. New boxes are shipping with 2.0

Can I ask... why would you want to do this??

I also prefer the 1.1 interface and have no intention of ever upgrading.

The Take 2 upgrade ( down grade ? ) turned the Apple TV into a glorified itunes store portal, with a poorer interface and user experience.

I get all my content using EyeTV or rip from purchased dvds.

For me the version 2.0 software is an apple marketing dream ( apple release hardware that provides a direct portal into their store, that they have total control of what can be purchased, and how that media can be used ), that I have no interest in taking part in.

I suppose if you have no other means of getting content the version 2 software is good, but for me it offers nothing but a downgrade.

I just purchased my Apple TV less than two weeks ago, and the Kansas City Apple store still had a few of the non updated boxes in stock. So there might still be others available around in different stores. FWIW.

Why I would want to downgrade to a stable, well-behaved, software version?

At this point I would happily trade off the ability to download rentals for the ability to see my media, stream without stuttering, not have the Apple TV reset at arbitrary times, etc.

Have you not seen the multitude of posts regarding Take 2's instability?

Have you tried resetting your router, AppleTV and the computer(s) you're streaming from? I had a stuttering problem and rebooted all three and now it's gone. Glitches happen with every iteration of every piece of technology I've ever owned... including pencils, go figure.

There were other performance issues I had that were not attributable to AppleTV, though I've read so many posts on here where users complain about problems that they haven't even begun to troubleshoot and they throw their arms up in despair blaming AppleTV before even empirically confirming what the source of the problem is.

I'm not sure I understand your first complaint: Being able to "see" all your media? What do you mean, exactly?

Yes. My AppleTV is wired to the AEBS. My iMac is about 20 feet away. My iMac's connection to the AEBS is N, rock solid, etc. I have the AEBS in the living room because that's where the cable comes in, and I have a cable modem.

Unfortunately, I don't need to reset the AppleTV as it does that on its own every so often. (Uhm, I just couldn't resist. It actually has rebooted 3X since the upgrade to 2.0.)

As a result of Apple software updates, I have been rebooting the computer every few days, too.

I will cycle all of the interacting components.

LOL. Listen, I know what you're talking about. I am in product development (software) and worked on a variety of early hardware (like the Newton, Sega's 3D Saturn, etc.) with primitive tools. I understand the complexity of these systems: Wireless, iTunes Server, Take 2, ITMS, etc., not to mention a new OS. Any/all of them could be interacting to produce irregular performance. I have experience with much simpler systems and have found debugging to be... at best.... challenging.

There were other performance issues I had that were not attributable to AppleTV, though I've read so many posts on here where users complain about problems that they haven't even begun to troubleshoot and they throw their arms up in despair blaming AppleTV before even empirically confirming what the source of the problem is.

I actually agree with your observation, and, empirically, I can tell you that with Take 1.1 I had none of the benefits of Take 2, but I also had none of the issues from which I now suffer. I think that eliminating Take 2 is a reasonable debugging exercise, don't you? If the problems vanish with 1.1, couldn't it be simple 2.0?

My original position, which I have not altered, is that I would gladly give up rentals (all that Take 2 seems to have added of consequence*) for the stability of 1.1. I am sure there are many people with 10.5 who long for the stability of 10.4.x.

I'm not sure I understand your first complaint: Being able to "see" all your media? What do you mean, exactly?

When I select My Movies from the top-level menu, I am informed that I have none. When I leave that menu and return, it (often, but not always) properly displays the titles in my iTunes library. It seems like some connection issue, though, as I said, my Apple TV is wired to my AEBS, which is extremely close to my iMac, N network, rock solid, etc. I would not be surprised to learn that many of these problems we have been having with Take 2 reside in iTunes.

I have cycled the Apple TV, and have had success, but only for a while.

None of these are deal-breakers, especially considering the risk I would take trying to put 1.1 back on it.

I will patiently wait (and hope) for an update.

*Actually, I have purchased music via AppleTV and the ITMS, and had it sync back to my iMac. I would miss this feature.

Mike,

I just tried what I recommended and it did not work. When I was running Carbon Copy Cloner it reported an error upon trying to copy the Private directory to the ATV drive. I am going to try a work-around to see if I can resolve it.

Ooh! Bravery!

Lemme know...

This happens to me a lot also. I really would rather have 1.1 instead of 2.0 because it worked well with all of my existing media. I have played around a lot with 2.0 and the functions that interact with apple are really cool and work very well, but viewing my own media is exactly like 1.1 except that it does not connect half of the time, and I am forced to unplug the :apple:TV a lot. I have tried setting the :apple:TV to stream instead of sync and this has worked pretty well. . . EXCEPT it takes between 1 and 5 minutes to view the list of movies, music or photos and it takes about 3-5 minutes to start a movie. (everything is hard wired to a gigabit hub, everything was way faster when it was 1.1 over wireless G) but, when on stream i havent lost a connection in the middle of a movie and I have not gotten the 'you have no movies' warning. . . it only takes 1-5 minutes to load my list of movies instead.

It seems to me that apple is only about half way finished with Take 2.0. they got their half working to interact with their media. But now they need to finish the other half and get everything working with my media. And while they are at it they might as well upgrade the UI so it doesnt look exactly like the 1.1 UI. It could look like the apple side of Take 2 UI which is pretty cool.

<edit>
oh, and somehow, apple needs to add an interface for hulu.com. i have become addicted to that web site, finding and watching lots of TV shows on demand. . for free. hulu should totally pay me for this plug for them!
