Run the Jailbreak (greenp0ision in my case), reboot, plug in to TV, reboot again, job done. XBMC is installed, NitoTV is installed. Doesn't take any longer than 15 minutes, and that was my first JB.
aTV Flash has got to work in a similar way, you'll still have to plug it in to the computer, so all you're doing is paying $30 for a slightly different looking program to do the JB.

TBH I didn't do that much research into it, so I probably could have done it for free, but this stuff isn't second nature to me, and I would have to spend hours reading tutorials etc.
With the aTV Flash, you only have to plug it in while you're jail breaking, then the flash is done over WiFi, and you only have to plug it in if you reboot the aTV and have a tethered JB- mine is, but I haven't needed to plug it in yet.
It's easy, it has CouchSurfer so I can live stream MotoGP, it can read all my external HD movies, it's simple, I didn't have to google different coding and figure out why xyz wasn't working.
Basically if you're a technology dumbarse, but want the extra stuff Apple won't let you have, and are time poor, pay the $30.
If you understands 1's and 0's and all that jazz and know where the files and all that crap goes, then you should be able upload and plug whatever you want into wherever you want for free!
I have enough headaches when I JB my iPhone and iPad lol. It's nice to have a simple option.
Yea i still don't get why ppl would waste 30 on something you can do for free.. Jbing with season pass is basic as fuhhhh and sshing and copying and pasting code from wiki isn't much more difficult but i guess to each his own
It's being promoted today on MacUpdate at 33% off, so I was about to start a similar thread asking if it's worth it. 14 euros isn't a huge amount.
The only feature I'd like (apart from 1080p of course) would be the support for other video formats; though it'd be nice if it supports the native UI. The built-in web-browser might be ok, but I doubt I'd use it much.
By comparison, how do Plex/XBMC on ATV work with the Remote app, if at all?

Avoiding the butt-ugly XBMC and using FireCores MediaPlayer which looks exactly like the native interface alone is worth the 30 bucks.
Add the Backup feature, CouchSurf and Last.FM support and I'm a very happy camper.
Remote app is ok.. but if you invest a bit more, you go grab the Rowmote Pro app for iOS. this app is sick! mouse-like support for use in couchsurfer, full keyboard support for fast typing anywhere... a must. You only need to install the Rowmote software within Nito.
Just wondering if they got finally the way to do a untethered jailbreak for the newest ATV OS update.
I'm the OP. Yes, I'm talking about the whole solution. I don't mind doing it by myself but since it's only $20 today, I was tempted. Looks nice and doesn't require a lot of work.
I'm on iOS5 though so I'd have to wait until it's jailbreakable.
I purchased it when it was in beta and just updated my appletv with the final version.
I am VERY happy with the ease of installation and I have no problem supporting a company that dedicates themselves to jail-breaking.
The media player interface feels like it was made by Apple. I can browse the HD on all my computers on the network and play movies downloaded from the net.

I do a tethered boot but I never unplug the power to my appletv so its not an issue for me. You can power it off with the remote and power it back up and no tethered boot is required.

XBMC is ugly? Which skin? Have you tried all of them?
I think I tried about five, they were all ugly, bulky and not at all sleek.
In comparison Flash MediaPlayer is way easier to use, faster and looks just like the native interface.
You've not used the recent versions of XBMC then? The new default theme is excellent.

The picture viewer is good too if you dont want to use the native ATV one or feel like browsing pictures by folder rather then iphoto layout.

All in all unless i want XBMC addon channels installed or Navi-X or Icefilms I don't even go to XBMC any more.

Everything worked fine for me - but I hate the skins - they are so distracting. How do you get rid of them? I'm super busy or I would read the docs - can anyone get me started?

I think the native interface of ATV2 is nothing but a piece of crap. But to each his own, I guess...
