It was downloaded over 5 million times during the first 24 hours. This falls short of the record-setting 8 million downloads that Firefox 3 had during its first day, but it still reflects the intense enthusiasm of the browser's fans.

The collective number of total Firefox downloads exceeded 500 million last year and is currently estimated at roughly 950 million.

Just to be clear up front, 5 million is user initiated direct downloads of the packages from mozilla website.

you can follow the download count here http://downloadstats.mozilla.com/, at this moment, it stands at 8.7 million

The second number quoted is that all the updates? OR people downloading it from the mozilla site.

I ask as when 3.5 came out I updated my Firefox by using the Help - Check for Updates option

It went through

3.0.6 - 3.0.7 - 3.0.8- ... - 3.0.11 - 3.5

So in that one update I downloaded Firefox 7 times.

i believe that number is indeed user initiated download from mozilla website, check for update doesn't count in that number. take 3.0.11 for an example, that update generated 150m updating-download in one day, 950m can not possibly cover all the updates.

however, real world firefox user base is about 220-270m, so obviously many people downloaded multiple times, and many people tried and decided not to use it eventually.

When I tried to go through the update in the browser it never showed up.

I had to go to the website to download it. Weird right?

5 M without really promoting it like they did with the FF 3 download day, sounds like a pretty good number.
