Does anyone with past experience of such things want to hazard a guess at when Firefox is likely to be available to run directly on M1/Big Sur?

Again, based on past experience, what would the advice be?

I can certainly wait if it would be best, at the same time would the Beta version be updated as required in the interim and therefore improve over time?

Would it actually be beneficial to Mozilla to have people running it?

Just use Firefox 83 via Rosetta. On 15 December it will be automatically updated to Firefox 84 and it will be universal.

I'm using Firefox Beta since years, never had any major issue. Unfortunately FF 84 on mac still feels a bit behind Safari and Chrome :(.

Safari and Chrome are native so it should. Safari is likely optimized for Apple Silicon. It will take a while for Firefox to get there.

Beta 84 works ok but still crashes often. uBlock Origin crashes Tab almost everytime that you want to edit filters or preferences. Waiting for a fix.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'll probably just wait for now and use Safari in the meantime.

I don't actually find them that different, just been using Firefox for so long that it feels like home so any wee differences tend to play on your mind much more than they should.

I've been using Firefox since it was named Phoenix.

I don't need an M1 - my main excuse for buying one would be to do Firefox development - probably fixing bugs.

Been running the beta. 0 issues so far. No slowdowns or crashes. Runs pretty much like a non beta browser from my experience

Thanks for this, on the basis of what you said I've also downloaded it and it's running fine.

Another question for those who are familiar with such things, will I have to download the 'full' version when it becomes available or will this be upgraded?

Thanks.

I could be wrong since I recently switched to Mac, but when I went from rosetta firefox to m1 betafox I just downloaded the beta and it overrode the rosetta version when I dragged it into my applications folder. I am going to do the exact same thing again when it comes out of beta

Must've done something similar for me as it had my homepage and bookmarks already there when I first opened it!

Maybe subsequent updates will upgrade it anyway?, hopefully someone who knows these things will tell us.

New to Mac as well, just starting my second week after 25 odd years on Windows.

Use the beta. It's not as stable as a release (eg many plugins break) but it's FAR better than the release version under Rosetta2. The release version is all kinds of flaky on Big Sur and/or my M1 Air. ;/
