I have had this issue since version 43 of Firefox. I am now running version 47.01 on a Mac OS Yosemite and when I reinstall the same version 47.01 after a few hours I get a message that a a newer version already exists. Firefox reports 47.01 and at the time of this comment Aug-1-2016 there is no newer version. If I reinstall right after just installing I get the message "An item named Firefox.app already exists" ,

What is changing in Firefox that makes reinstalling the same version believe it is installing over a newer version?

I'm not sure why it keeps saying there is a newer version available. Might be best to completely remove & start over.

As such I would recommend dragging the Firefox application from the Applications folder into AppCleaner. This will complete a 'full uninstall' -- gets rid of all related .plist files, etc. Delete those files, empty the Trash & then restart your Mac with reopen windows when logging back in disabled/unticked.

Does this do the trick?

This problem seems to occur through Firefox or the Tor browser which also uses Firefox. When I do not open Firefox the issue does not occur. I am now trying opening Firefox and not using the browser to see if the problem occurs.
