Firewall Problem

Hi,

I have recently brought a black Macbook and have been very happy so far, howver, today I came across my first problem with my new machine.

I went to activate the firewall in osx and get the error message:
You cannot change the firewall settings because there was an error reading them from your system, If the problem persists, restart your computer and try again.

Needless to say I have restarted multiple times, repaired permissions and have searched for someone with a similar problem, but found nothing.

I am running 10.4.7 and have no other firewall or anitvirus software installed.

If anyone has any clue what to do it would be very appreciated.

It sounds like a missing configuration file of some sort. (eg. in /etc ). If a disk repair doesn't help (this can be done by booting while holding shift), my best suggestion is a re-install.

The file you need is in the /etc directory and is called firewall.conf. It should have the following permissions set:-

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 688 Feb 24 11:12 firewall.conf

You can get these in the Terminal by running the following command

ls -l /etc/firewall.conf

Anything other than -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel and you need to repair your permissions. If it's not there at all, grab it off your Tiger install disks.
