Firewire Drive and iTunes

I have been having problems with a firewire drive. The drive in question is a 120 GB drive that I use to store all my MP3's (80 GB's worth).

In the middle of playing a song, iTunes will completely stop and the only way for me to get iTunes out of its infinite loop is to power off the firewire drive and force iTunes to quit.

I then power the firewire drive back on and launch iTunes again.

Then iTunes and the drive work again until the same problem repeats itself.

I got this problem first when I upgraded to 10.2.8.

I started fresh with a copy of Panther and the same problem occurs.

I have tried switching the firewire enclosure, cable and port it is plugged into. Nothing.

Morever, I have checked the drive and there are no problems found, so there must be a communication error between iTunes and the firewire drive?

does the drive power down in the middle of the song? i'm thinking that is what is happening ... which then stalls itunes as it tries to find each one of the songs in your library and fails.

The drive is still visible on the desktop. So if it is powering down, I am not sure why the OS still recognizes it.

Any other thoughts?

Along the same 'power down' thought, it could be some power management setting that is spinning down the disk after a period of inactivity. However, it might not be spining up the disk correctly (it being either the OS or your drive/enclosure), which then confuses iTunes. . . .


Try putting some other piece of data on the drive and accessing it through Finder or some other application after iTunes hangs.

You might also try poking around your System Preferences and see if you can turn off some power management stuff.

Does it get better, worse, or no change with iTunes 4.1?

If none of that works. . . maybe call 1-800-MY-APPLE

I have updated all applications and done a clean install of the OS. Still I have these problems. I guess I have to take my machine into Apple.
