is there any way for the ipod to get juice from the firewire socket so it can be charged when the computer is on sleep mode?

I know that when I plug my 3G iPod into my PowerBook and tell it to sleep, it keeps charging...
if that doesn't work, you still have your wall socket, right?
Well.. since the computer is technically still on (just.. paused?) I don't see why the power would be cut off...
Could you try a factory reset and see if that helps?
And I bet you've done this, but make sure it's plugged in really well.

thanks for the replys, i thought it was a tad strange too! i assumed the voltage lines would still be live!

My 3g iPod charges just fine when both of the Macs on my sig are sleeping. Keep us posted dude.

I imagine when a PowerBook/iBook is sleeping the USB/Firewire ports only supply enough energy to initiate the computer again.
i.e. plug in a printer/keyboard/press keyboard key/etc while computer is sleeping and it'll wake up again. There must be a small current just to see the device is there.
However, if the laptop is not plugged in then the computer wouldn't want to charge the iPod while sleeping cos it could eat your PB reserve battery.. which would switch the maschine off.
It'd be interesting to see if the charges from a PB/iBook while asleep, but itself plugged in charging (the iBook/PB). This would explain how the iPodds connected to PowerMacs and iMacs still charge while asleep.

yep! Happened with me.
Charged up my 20G iPod, thought "hey, Ill leave it in here overnight - can't do any harm" next day the battery was dead.
The sad thing is that it took me months to figure this out. I thought my battery had died. I was all ready for the eBay sale!!

I think powerbooks generally dont supply enough power whilst in sleep mode (preserving battery power) but powermacs do (still attached to mains just saving electricity).
