Firmware 3.0 Update - Not Compatible Error?

Hello,

I have a friend who is going to help me test a new app i am developing for 3.0, in return i am adding him to my dev account so he can try out 3.0

I had added his device id, and sent him the 3b2 firmware. However when he tries to load it onto his iPhone 3G he get's an error stating the firmware is not compatible with his phone.

Now he is trying to do this from a windows vista PC with the latest itunes, could that be an issue? I has assumed that the update would work fine from both platforms as it is just a IPSW file, is that not the case?

If it isn't that then i am at a bit of a loss as to what the problem is. Does he need to be on a specific version of 2.0 to update?

There are 2 different iPhone firmware files, one for the first-gen and one for the 3G. Make sure they have the correct version.

Thanks for that, it is the 3G firmware he is using as i it the exact same file i used to update mine that i sent to him via mobileme.

He is gonna pop over tonight so i will try doing it from my mac instead, in case it's a weird PC quirk or the file got corrupted somehow in the transfer. Though i guess if the ipsw file was corrupted it would say so. I have had a problem with a corrupted ipsw before and itunes did display a message saying it was indeed corrupted.

Any other ideas? I have checked and he is running 2.2.1 (5h11) so that shouldn't be causing any issues.

I was trying to upgrade/unlock an 3G iPhone and got the same error message. I was pretty sure I had everything correct until I opened up the iPhone and looked on the inside. Sure enough it was not a 3G, but it was a 3GS (had a number 7 cable for antenna signal). All this time I was trying to put a 3G iphone firmware on a 3GS iphone, no wonder it did not work. So I have learned that if I was able to do it before and can't do it now with the same stuff, I'd better check my stuff again. I hope this help someone.
