I've got two gmail accounts. One fetches every15 mins as it should.
The other fetches nearly never. It last fetched on 7/14.

The apple person I just spoke to said they can do a fresh install of the firmware (not iOS). This is a troubleshooting step I've never done and I would need to start the phone as fresh so as not to re import any corrupted file that has caused the problem.

Has anyone tried this? How often is firmware responsible for these kinds of issues that I presumed would be ios related

I think I was misled by a genius rep who was less than impressive all round. Definitely not the typical helpful Apple employee in other regards.

I'd never heard about this and after asking around I believe the firmware is essentially bound in with the iOS.

If anyone has a recommendation for saving messages and applying them to a freshly set up iPhone, I'd be appreciative of it

You either got a bad support person or misunderstood what they're telling you. There's no separate firmware for iOS devices. If you delete both Gmail accounts and add back the one that doesn't automatically check, does that account then automatically start checking?

I got bad advice. My understanding of it was right to begin with.

Removing and adding back doesn't help. Only potential fix is starting new phone, which I did about a year ago and the problem was here anyway!
