Hello!
First and foremost a HUGE thank you to all contributors.
I was given an 09 MP with a GT120 and dual 2.26 Xeons.
After digging around here (and a few other sites) I’ve managed to get it to 5,1, 144.0.0.0, upgrade to dual X5680s, grab a flashed HD 7870, stuff in some 1333 ram and get this thing running Mojave on an SSD.

I’ve made (and tested) a clone of my Mojave install with the intent of trying the dosdude Catalina patcher but having a fallback in case any issues arise.
My question:
If I upgrade to Catalina via dosdude method and decide I want to use Open Core instead to eventually move up to Big Sur would I need to toss the Mojave clone in first and flash the nvram since (from what I’ve gleaned here) the dosdude method applies rigid software patches (an oversimplification, no doubt)?
I apologize in advance if my limited knowledge of firmware patching/OS upgrades makes this question irrelevant.
Thanks for any input!

Dosdude or OpenCore does not change your Firmware.

Anyway, you might need to clean nvram by a deep nvram reset (alt cmd p r held until it chimes the 4th time).

you can dump the firmware in the current state to be safe to get things back from the nvram content side.

its always a good idea to have a firmware backup and check it for nvram variable duplication.
