Firmware Update = MBP doorstop?

So my friend just told me in a panic that the firmware update turned his 1 month old SR MBP into a brick. Totally dead. Of course it's Saturday night and no ability to call Apple for panic help...

Anyone have any ideas? It doesn't power on at all, apparently, and died during reboot.

I read the other thread but it didn't give me new info to offer him.

He's very bummed...

The firmware update completed successfully and he followed the instructions?

If yes, then the timing of the failure has to be a coincidence or we would have read about others having this problem.

The update worked fine for me.
Did absolutely nothing that I noticed, but it still worked fine, and my MBP still works fine.

I'm assuming so - he's a good little geek! Don't know all the details but I was wondering if anyone had seen something similar. Obviously it's covered under warrenty, but I'm sure he'd love to have it back and running...

Any good things to try? power button? reseed anything?

Sounds like a rare failure to me, I haven't seen any reports here on the forum of this happening to anyone else. I hope he had a backup of his stuff; it would certainly suck to get all your stuff set up just like you like and end up having to do it all again.

Has he tried the Firmware Restoration CD?

If the system won't power-on at all, he might have to reset the SMC first.

Beyond that, I have no other suggestions other than to return it for warranty service.

I'd guess he didn't follow the instructions properly.

From what I've seen, practically all the problems with this update is because people didn't follow the instructions right (i.e. holding down the power button until you hear the beep and let the new update install properly).

Well, whatever happened it's in the shop with a dead logic board. Odd timing for a failure indeed.

Wondering if I should proceed with the update myself - don't want to have the rolling band reset issue, but I'm interested in the extended battery life.

The firmware update in of itself will not cause a computer to die. However if the power is lost prior to finishing the update then the system will definitely not reboot. A prior poster mentioned the Update CD, this is what has to be used if a firmware update fails in mid-stream.

The only item in the post that is odd, is a comment that states that the lap-top is now in for service with a 'dead logic board'. This seems to imply that the firmware update was not the cause, rather it was a very rare coincidental component failure.

Interesting to find out what the actual cause was.....
