If I get a brand new iPhone directly from AT&T what firmware/software version will it have? Or is there any way to tell without actually turning on the phone?

I just got a brand new replacement, week 7 so sometime within this past 2 weeks. It came with 3.1.3 on it.
Ok thanks. I have a friend that got a brand new 3Gs with an upgrade yesterday. He just got it to sale because he is happy with his 3G and needs the money. We were wondering if we could unlock it, but it's looking like we aren't going to be able to. Thanks.
