Hi,
My firmware version seems to be: 9144.0.7.4.0

Is this ok for a bootable nvme.m2 ssd card?

Thanks, Kees!, that helps and eliminates one possible cause for not being able to boot from my NVMe.
I am not sure if my GPU (Radeon HD7800 2GB) supports metal. Might that be a cause?

O, Wow, thanks! But this is quite confusing for a newbie in these matters. I was able to get some log files. However have no idea how to distill the firmware version from it...

You Mac Pro currently have MP51.0089.B00, the last firmware update from High Sierra era and with no NVMe support at all.

Read the first post below to know what to do to upgrade to 144.0.0.0.0.

OK, thanks. But in order to upgrade the firmware, my Radeon HD 7800 will not suffice?
So first step is to have a metal supported GPU? Is that correct?

as @tsialex said, thats a Firmware without NVMe boot support,

keep that Firmware dump in a secure location, this can be a life saver if it is damaged.

The first purpose of making a dumper was to make backups, it got envolved for analyses and flashing (for the brave ones ;-) )
