whats a firmware update and how do i get one..

also, my macbook has the whine which goes away when i open photobooth as mentioned in other posts, but i only noticed it when i read the other post and opened photobooth, its barely noticable and im guessing its nothing to worry about, i think this forum is making me paranoid..
