Wanting to get my wife a new iPad. Her first gen Pro is starting to get long in the tooth, plus it only has 32 gigs. I’ve read benchmarks but anyone with some real world experience ? Is it a worth it?

I don't have the 8th gen but I do have the Air 3 which has the same A12 chipset and 3GB RAM. Definitely fewer hiccups on the Air 3 than on Pro 9.7.

Specs are good but there are drawbacks from the 9.7 Pro, including the screen and speakers.

The iPad 8 does have a better chip and more RAM. Also smaller bezels.

You can likely find a 10.5 Pro for around the same price as a new iPad 8. The 10.5 Pro is still a beast to this day.

Pro 10.5's okay but if I were to chose between Pro 10.5 and iPad 8, I'd go for iPad 8.

Granted, part of that is because battery life on my Pro 10.5 has gotten relatively poor already (and it wasn't stellar to begin with). There's also higher risk of bright spot.

Strange, the battery life on my 10.5" iPad remains excellent. I use it fairly intensively, too, especially to draw.

Mine used to do 12+ hour days (primarily reading). Haven't really checked battery health in a long while but it's likely below 80% now.

I would also get an iPad Pro 10.5 and if the battery health of the bought device is not in a good health, I would have it replaced if it is still in the budget. It would still be a beast compared to the iPad 8 and she would get Promotion display, better speakers, screen, more ram..etc.

I would recommend staying away from the pro 10.5 because of the white spot issue. It happened to me. Go for the 8 or wait for the 9. Rumors are going around the 9 will be 10.5 inch, A13 processor, 4Gb of ram, 64gb of storage for $299. Also said to be coming out the first half of 2021.

The $299 would be for education only, like now. Apple is not going to lower their entry price. The rest of the rumors is credibile, even if I wouldn't bet on 64GB. And this also means that there might be the same white spot risk, unless the go for a non laminated version of the screen...

I hope they stick with non laminated screens. They have much less issues and I personally prefer them and I have had 2 iPads with laminated screens.
