First Gen Mac Mini Install Discs

Hi,

I'm a windows user who decided to have a venture into the mac side of things to see how the other half live by purchasing a used first gen mini. im finding it nice so far but wanted to do a fresh install so that it was named the way i like it and knew there was no 'gunk' lying around on the hdd. I stuck install disc 1 in and opened 'install osx and bundled software' at which point it said it would have to reboot. upon reboot i get a kernal panic screen (see attached pic).

This screen comes up every time i try to boot with the disc in (including trying to get aht to run etc) and I'm pretty sure its the correct set of discs for the machine as ive seen posts elsewhere with other folk with the same problem and same disc etc. I'll list the disc details below.

I dont want to have to travel to an apple store and then pay them to do something that i should be able to find a solution to online.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

First clear your pram and nvram http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Second reset the smc http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Then try booting from your cd by pressing c. Dont know if thats gonna help, but im sure thats what the apple geniuses would start with.

I had already done the pram one but done it again away and the second one you linked appears to be for intel based machines only. My mini is the ppc version.

So I'm still getting the kernel screen when trying to boot from the install disc.

Could be that the disk has simply gone bad and is not reading properly, or it is simply not the disk for that computer. Did the disk come with the computer? It can be hard to match them up since the wrong disk won't work.

That's the wrong disc for an PPC Mac Mini. PPC Mac Mini's where only shipped with 10.3.7, 10.4.0, and 10.4.2 discs. I'd suggest locating a Leopard retail disc. These are black, not gray.

I have had the same thing happen to me before. For me the thing that fixed it was to remove everything that I had plugged into the mini except my keyboard and mouse. I was using a simple USB hub and when I went to install an new version of OS X, I kept getting a kernel panic. I removed the USB hub and plugged my keyboard and mouse into the min directly and then I was able to run the installer without any problems. It seemed odd to me that a USB hub (with nothing but the mouse and keyboard plugged into it) would cause problems but it did. I would recommend unplugging any extras that you have plugged into your computer and then try it. Depending on what keyboard you are using ( Apple wireless or one from a 3rd party) you might want to try it without the keyboard if you are still having trouble.

Oh, and I used the Tiger install disk as well (my Power PC mini came with Panther but I bought the upgrade to Tiger and it worked fine). The Power PC mini can use Leopard (10.5) or before (I prefer Tiger as some of my older software won't run under Leopard).

Your Kernel Panic screen says that it's unable to find a driver for the platform "PowerMac 10,1". This implies you got the wrong restore discs for your Mac Mini. PM me if you are still unable to find the correct discs. I am pretty sure I have a set around the house somewhere.
