I'm planning on buying a used first gen iphone (spare me the wellfare comments), and I was just wondering if it is possible to upgrade a jailbroken/unlocked iphone running 1.1.4 to the new 2.0 firmware?

Maybe an obvious question, but I need to be sure - thanks!

Not atm, it will turn it into a factory 2.0 phone. However, the unlock and jailbreak app for the 2.0 firmware is supposed to come out sometime today, so you might want to wait a day or two before you update that bad boy.

In summary:

If you want to know if it will still work if you upgrade to 2.0, then yes it won't get bricked.

If you want to keep the unlock, then wait a few days.

I'm in Canada, so yes I *need* the unlock. Thanks for explaining that!

What do you mean, "it will brick"? So I can't upgrade to 2.0?

If you "restore" to 2.0 in iTunes, the phone will not be broken. You will just need to activate it with AT&T. Like I said, you might want to wait a few days if you want to keep the unlock

Just a last question: when its "jailbroken" (2.0), it can still do everything the original software can do, right? I.e. install apps from app store etc.

+apps Apple won't let on the App Store :) (ie emulators)

Remeber:

Jailbroken = unsigned third party apps
Unlocked = any GSM carrier
Activated = don't have to use iTunes to link to an official carrier

Usually this is how it goes down:

Legit iPhone users get it jailbroken

Legit AT&T users with no iPhone plan get Jailbroken/Activated

Unsupported carrier users get Jailbroken/Unlocked/Activated

If you are on an unsupport carrier, you can choose to not be jailbroken, but why? :)
