Good morning/evening....

Whats the cheapest and easiest way for me to get the first half life game onto my macbook?

I used to effing love that game, and playing through the new episodes on the 360 has made me want to play it again.

I know that I could buy a copy of XP, then do the bootcamp thing, get steam and download it.

But that seems too expensive to justify playing an game this old.

It would be worth it, if I played other PC games, but I dont, this will be a one off so to speak.

Any help? :apple:

I don't know how much it is now but I bought HL1 during some Steam sale a while back for 99p, and recently Blue Shift and that other official add on for 99p each during the Jan sale.

That's probably the best way of getting it. It's very old and is probably one of the few games to run in Crossover without having any visual difference from playing in native Windows.

I went the Steam route (Vista + bootcamp) and I have to say I'm really glad I did. Not all games will run well (or at all) via Crossover, and there may be some newer PC games that you'd try as well.

It's not the cheapest option, but as soon as a new game you like comes up for sale on Steam you'll probably be glad you went that route.

thanks for the replies :)

I think with it being such an old game, crossover might be an ok way to go.

but is it possible to get steam working on crossover to make my purchase?

If so, how do I do it?

I've been playing Halflife 1 recently on my Macbook Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) with GMA950 via Crossover Games. It works very well, with no slowdown although I do play it in a window on an external monitor rather than full screen. I also have been playing the Opposing Force add-on with no problems. I haven't been able to get Blue Shift to work at all so far however.

One thing to note is I was using the original CD releases, rather than Steam.... I guess they'd be very cheap on eBay now, but with no shipping costs Steam probably offers the best value.

Also if you get the Steam version just type this into the browser-

steam://installaddon/halflifehd

And it'll update your version with the better quality texture/model pack for free.

The first Half Life is the best game of it's kind I've ever played, and HL2 is a close second for adventure/shooter. If you can find an original copy of Half Life, it does not require Steam to run.
