First mac... Faulty?

Hey all... I my brand spanking new MBP just got delivered today. It's beautiful, but the dang thing froze twice in the first ten minutes. Had to do a hard restart...

Will this settle down, or do I have a faulty unit.

I would watch it, it may just have been some random thing and not happen again, or if it continues to happen then you may have a problem. What were you doing right before it froze.
 
sometimes (rarely) the install is bad from the factory (mine was) so if it persists you can a) do a hardware test from the disk and if all is good b) do a clean install, if after that its all bad then yes take it back for sure
 
I would DEFINITELY watch it, and look for other errors/problems ASAP so that if they do exist, you can get your machine replaced ASAP.

Trust me, with Apple's recent notebooks (macbook, macbook pro lineup), there's a 60% chance your unit will arrive faulty in one way or another. I am speaking purely from experience here after going through 4-5 Macbook Pro's with issues until getting a decent one.
 
I was just poking around in Safari.... not doing anything really. First my trackpad quits working then the whole thing stops.

How long does it normally take a MBP to boot up? It seems like its taking an extremely long time for mine
 
I called applecare and they had me do a series of resets and button presses... now it seems to run fine. And it boots up in 1/4 the time as before.

Strange.

The more I play with this thing, the more i'm liking it. OSX is really intuitive

I got my MBP yesterday and started to get Kernal Panics (to me seem like Windows Blue Screen of Death!) called up apple care and done pretty much what you have described. The gave me an option of returning it if I still get the same kernal panics. I have not had much of a chance to play with it since they asked me to do a clean reinstall. I also noticed the boot up times seeme to vary for me, sometimes its take atleast a minute while others have take seconds! Could this also be a fault machine?

hhmm no i thout the variations happened to all machines. depending on how hot/cold the machine was, and whether certain things were already loaded into ram etcetc.
 
The best thing about owning a Mac is the service. If you want you can take it into an Apple store and visit with one of the Mac Geniuses, they may or may not find an issue. If the problem persists they can help stop it before it becomes a really big issue for you. I have noticed my MBP acting a little weird, so I am on my way right now to an Apple Store so I can get it checked out.

Nah. If you install an update that requires a restart, the computer will take considerably longer to boot (since the update will be installed during the boot).

Mine varies too - although I rarely ever turn my computer off (every few days I restart). Sleep mode does me fine.

do you remember the series of keys they had you press?? id like to chuck that on my computer every now and then.

The key to hold down before switching on the mac is D, this takes you into the hardware diagnostics tool, check the advance testing and test. Mine took about 1 hour and 15 mins to run. After running it showed no errors. So looks like mine is on its way back :( . Unfortunately I dont have a apple store locally so can not walk in and get a change will have to wait a few business days:mad: !!!
