Agreed completely, I was just reading a different article from Nvidia and I will be getting one of these low cost machines that seem to be about on par with the mac mini (except for OS X).

I know some people will argue with this but to me OS X is not worth $300 when I just want a simple way to play everything I watch on my computer on my TV (hulu, netflix, itunes, DVDs), I was thinking about hooking my MB up to my TV but as it wouldn't be permanent there would be a lot of disconnecting/reconnecting of cables, looked at AppleTV which with boxee seems a decent solution but if I can get a full blown computer for about the same price as AppleTV why bother with AppleTV?

Apple needs to wake up and get in the game.

Hum... how do you get the 300$ price tag for OS X ? This thing isn't even being pegged to be equivalent to the Mac Mini at all.

For all we know, similarly specced, it'll be worth the same thing as a Mini and so your OS X "tax" will actually be 0$.

I think he arrives at $300.00 by accounting for the nettops' price @ $300.00 and then comparing that to the Mac Mini which starts at $600.00.

I agree with the OP as well. I was going to buy a Mac Mini for an HTPC setup, but the Mini is NOT worth $600.00, no matter how you slice it. $400.00 maybe, but no way is that box worth $600.00.

This will make a nice little hackintosh. I'm going to wait a bit and see what the other manufacturers bring to the Ion platform.

It looks like an interesting machine to me. The big problem (particularly using it as a Hackintosh) is the reliance on the GPU to make it fast. The Apple TV does that too, yet there is no way to take advantage of the GPU (unless you run Linux on it).

If the programs aren't written to use that GPU acceleration, then they will be slow. For me, I want to use my HTPC as a DVR *and* a HTPC. Part of that plan relies on the machine being able to serve the recorded files via iTunes (ideally to my existing TV). For me to push them out to another AppleTV, I will need to re-encode in an ATV format (something that an Ion will never do well). This would include HD recordings.

If I weren't considering this DVR side of the equation, then the Acer would easily be number one on my list.

iMovie editing on a 1080p TV is another thing the Acer won't likely do well at all.

And as I was pointing out and you probably missed, the nettop sure isn't equivalent to a Mac Mini.

Speaking of the Mac Mini as a HTPC, it's sure is the equivalent, for a whole lot less.

Just buy two of these and forget the Apple TV.

expect something very similar to this as an apple tv refresh once snow leopard and open cl are available

well, i suppose initially the software will most likely be crippled but hackable

fun times

(ps i know nothing for certain but based on prior rumors and rumors of apple component purchases i really do see this on its way)
