Heard about the incredible charges associated with full usage.

How should I configure the setting to be able to have the phone function without getting, mail, etc. Just be able to use the phone, get and send text and know and get VM.

Thanks for your advice...I leave tomorrow!!

Get an iPhone international data plan. They are actually not that terrible, and you will certainly want to have one. I spent 9 days in Guatemala and got the 50MB plan for $50 - was probably overboard. Depending on how long you'll be there you could probably get less. But you definitely want to get something before you go over there. I got my bill and AT&T messed up, charging me the basic data roaming rate while I was overseas. My usage added up to $350!! Luckily, they realized I had a plan and got rid of those charges but that just goes to show how quickly the bill can pile up if you don't have a plan.

Back with Update

Hi all. Back from 12 days in Europe. Bought a plan for 20mb per month for 25$. Man you learn fast how small that amount is!!
I monitored my usage often just to check what different "web checks" eat up. I bit anal I guess but it was a good learning experience to actually see what eats up the kb>mb's during a surf session.
I app stored the Skype app and it worked great in the apt. where I was staying which had a wi fi.
I burned through 18 MB during the trip but as said was really careful and mainly used the phone and any surfing or updating mail came at "free" wi fi sites.
Thanks for all the advice before the trip it really helped.
