I completed my foundations classes last year, and this year for my first quarter of Digital Design at University of Cincinnati DAAP, one of my finals was to create a portfolio site. This is work from my foundations year, and my first quarter of design. It's all marked up by hand with HTML, CSS and Javascript. I'd love to hear some feedback.

It doesnt work at all in IE7 (the navigation just doesnt show), in FF it works but when you click on things in your portfolio it pops up the window but also tries to go to the javascript link in the main window which just gives an error. And why does everything load in quicktime? Use regular images if its not a movie, quicktime takes a long time to load. The CSS is also not set for the visited links and the image border for the contact link isnt set to 0 so theres a blue line around it.

It looks nice but the code needs a lot of fixing before you show it to people.

not keen on the download only (pdf) approach for the resume, there was no reason why you couldn't have done a simple html page (with a pdf link maybe) for that.

As to the work section it doesn't seem to work right to me, the images kept disappearing when I run over another section - firefox 3 on windows at the moment. It was intermittent as well strangely.

And just out curiosity was there a reason the rollovers where done in java rather than say css?

What format are your files saved in, my browser loaded quicktime (which to be honest isn't very good on windows), is there a reason they're not jpegs or is there some sort of animation?

All of the rollover have to go, especially on your work section. When you first see it everything has a low transparency. I don't see the purpose of have every element a rollover. Its almost like you are doing a class lesson on rollovers. Also I agree you should do the rollovers with CSS. I'm not sure if its intentional or what but why is your work a separate popup window. I'm not sure if you were trying to do a light box or not. The minimalistic look is a nice direction because it focuses more on the work. I'm afraid it might be getting TOO simple as far as elements and layout. I think the homepage needs more than just the nav.

Ive attached a quick example of a layout. I think you can still make it minimalistic while still having a full page. Hope this helps.

Its nice. The roll over on the 3 menu items offers nice positive feedback to the underlying link, however you might consider if the changes in text are counter intuitive - when I mouse over a link I expect the link to get "thicker" rather than "thinner".

Generally speaking popup windows for your pictures is; for new web users distracting; for experienced web uses annoying. As suggested a list on the left side for your projects with the images opening in the main area of the site would be really nice.

Thanks a lot for all the input guys, it's a big help to get some outside feedback rather than stuff from classmates who have seen my work for the whole quarter. The rollovers are done in CSS, the sliding divs are done in Javascript. After reading your feedback, I agree that it is a little rollover heavy, turns into a "look what I can do!" kinda thing. I'll work on that. Since this was my first real site, and my teacher was grading it with Mac OS X Safari, that's what I built it to, so I'll have to do a lot of work for cross browser compatibility. I'm sticking with the layout for sure though, I really love the minimalist. As for the popup windows, it took less time for me to do popups than learn Lightbox, so that's why I did it, I do intend to change that. My Resume needs to be PDF friendly for my co op employers, so that it is printable. I'll work on it, maybe now, maybe later, but when I revise it I'll give you guys a link. If you could, take a look at it in Safari on a Mac. Thanks a lot for your help guys!
