The first public beta of os x 10.10.2 build 14C81h was released to the public beta testers today.

Note that this also updates the firmware if you get it through the mac app store.

It is possible to install it without the firmware update. If you would prefer to do it this way instead, use a direct link for the delta or combo. Doing it this way will not update the firmware.

Here is how you can get the direct links:

The delta can be used to update 10.10.1 or previous beta of 10.10.2 up to current beta build of 10.10.2.

The combo updates 10.10, 10.10.1 or previous beta of 10.10.2 up to current beta of 10.10.2.

Don't post the links on macrumors though because that would breach macrumors rules.

For the delta

Just go to your Library/Updates folder after you start the download from the mas. A new folder with numbers appears. Open it. At first, there will be two files inside which you can open with textedit. The one with extension extraInfo has a link with smd extension. Copy this link. Change the extension in your copy (but NOT in the original file) to pkg and that gives you the direct link.

Once you have your link, if you want to install it without the firmware update, cancel the mac app store download and delete the folder with numbers. Use your direct link to download and install the delta without firmware update.

For the combo

This is a bit harder to find and make appear in the mas.

Make a partition or virtual machine for the first public build 14A389. Be sure never to allow this to be updated. Boot up in 14A389 or run the virtual machine for it.

Install the public beta access utility (available from https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/ ). Check for software updates. A different thing will show here called the "Combined seed". Click Update. (Don't worry - we will cancel this later).

Do not let the updating procedure to complete. Click Cancel in the mac app store. If that fails, force quit the mac app store.

Delete the folder with numbers from the Library/Updates folder.

Hmmm! Too late for me. I just updated through App Store. I am running Yosemite off an external hard drive, however Yosemite is not my main operating system. I am still running Snow Leopard as main OSX.
I'm not sure that I wanted to update firmware!
I understand what firmware is, but are there any potential issues in my circumstance?

Thanks

Note that my method for the delta link may sometimes give you a link to a patch file instead called OSXUpd10.10.2PublicSeedPatch.pkg.

To correct this and get the link for the delta instead, delete the word "Patch" in the filename. So the link should end in /OSXUpd10.10.2PublicSeed.pkg.

No problems

I just installed from App Store, totally normal install and no problems.
The machine is a mid-2010 MBP 15".

I installed late last night and had no problems on my late 2012 16GB iMac. The download from Apple Store was longer then the install.

I was able to successfully install the beta this morning, however on two tries last night, I was unable to boot to the desktop and restarting would not fix the issue. I had to restore.
Today, I still used the App Store method.

Is this build newer than the current dev release?

Edit:
The build number is 'h' so by the letter of the law (or vice versa), so, yes

What firmware update are we talking about? I could not find any info anywhere on that. I am on a Late 2011 MBP 15.

Guys, if you updated to Public beta your spotlight works good? Mine keeps kind of rebooting and doesn't start.

Wasn't there supposed to be a new Look Up dialog (3-finger tap on a word) in 10.10.2? I don't see it in the public beta.

ny somewhere
so far, so good. most importantly, seems to have fixed the ridiculous mail lag issue i was having (for about 2 weeks), typing in apple mail (maybe too soon to be sure).

all else seems much as it was so far (this is my first day on 10.10.2 beta...).

EDIT: email lag is back, 3rd email. first 2 were fine. so it goes...

It seems 10.10.2 has fixed the slow (black screen) when quick switching users or switching to login screen. Previously it could take 30 seconds + with black screen before returning to login screen.
Did anyone else experience this?

GatorGhost made another thread on it relating mostly to problems with installation at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1830643/

As I mentioned last night...two attempts to install 10.10.2 failed and I easily restored by way of Time Machine. This morning it blew right through and properly installed. Why, I do not know.
My question to you..about the firmware issue. Your knowledge is much greater than mine here.
With an iMac retina, what are the in's and out's of installing the new beta and trying to avoid the firmware changes. Would it not be the best for me to accept the Apple designated new firmware versus the other methods that you presented as per having a Retina iMac?
I am a long time Win-Tel guy new to OS X and I am curious about the new computing world of Apple.

Weird, I still can't see it via the App Store.

This is a public beta.

Have you signed up to the public beta program and if so, installed the public beta access utility?

Otherwise, I will just say this 10.10.2 version hasn't been released yet to the public. So if that is what you are looking for, you probably still have have quite a wait yet.

We probably have quite a few more builds to go before it is released to the public.
