First Runway Shoot - Art Fashion Show

This is Revolution Wear 2009.

RevWear is an environmentally friendly fashion show, inspired by issues ranging from globalization, anticonsumerism, GLBTQ, women’s rights, poverty, animal rights and many more. Created by the loving raging rebels who are the RevWear Committee.

Revolution Wear is an idea, an action, a lifestyle, a tool, a means to an ends, a starting point, a movement, a vehicle, a message, part of something much bigger, the embodiment of love and passion, freedom and creativity. It is whatever you make of it and is as powerful as you allow it to be. It tares at definitions and replaces them with questions. Revolution Wear creates beauty from the abject using signfiers of consumer culture to deconstruct the machine.

I'd love to hear some critiques and comments on these. My first runway shoot. Lighting was horrible, 4 bright lamps right over the model's heads, and none from the front. I did my best. You can CLICK here if you wanna see the flickr set.

My first impression is that you were shooting with a single prime lens and were unable/unwilling to change your position to get better framing. Most of those diagonal compositions look like mere attempts at fitting more of the model into the frame.

Yes, you are correct. I had to make do with a prime. I didn't have a chance to go get a 24-70, which I think would've been a MUCH better lens for this job. If I had a 24-70, I would've been able to move more behind the crowd, and get a wider variety of pictures. I had 3 midterms that week, and literally had no time to sit down for anything, much lens commute 2 hrs to rent a lens. Excuses, I know.

I know the lighting could be better, but the setup was horrible. There were 4 very strong lamps overhead the models, and nothing from the front. So once they walk a foot beyond the sweet-spot, they have strong shadows on their face and body.

Yeah, nothing you can do about that, unless the organizers allow flash photography.

Your pics were pretty rough, but the so-called fashion designer(s) should be shot. What an infantile, obivous and pointless display. Back to art school kiddies

It is unfortunate that you were shooting a show where the models were lit so very poorly. It is a bigger shame that there was actually a show with models who had to endure such ****** lighting for unknown reasons. They all look bad. Not the pictures, the lighting. It's sad.

It appears you did what you could with what you had and you seemed to have fared well in that respect.

I think I learned a lot more from this, than if I had a perfectly lit catwalk above, below and from the sides. But now, I'm very curious and interested in doing something like that. Trouble is....how to get in? LOL.

Ugly models, ugly clothing, terrible designs.

Nevermind the lighting or photography– I don't think there was much you could do here.

Ryan i agree with you butt is a nice show.

I see no reason to be so harsh on the models or the clothes. The models are pretty young ladies, not to the caliber as professionals, but this was obviously not a professional shoot. They are real women with real bodies and don't deserve that kind of response.

As to the pictures, several / most of them have blown highlights, which is within photographer control. The harsh lighting was obviously a clue that the people putting on the show had given no thought to photography. In those cases the best thing to do is find the spots where there is decent light and WAIT like a hunter till the action comes to the light. It's all about the light.
