first time jailbreak/unlock advice needed...

Hi all, im pretty new to this so hopefully i can get some help. I checked through some of the FAQ's and its kind of confusing. i see that there are alot of choices out there. i was wondering if someone could guide me.

I have a 3gs iphone that came with the 3.0 OS. Im using the new version of iTunes on windows 7.
I upgraded to 3.1 and 3.2 without knowing about jailbreaking or unlocking or ever thinking i would need it.

Id like to set my phone up so that i can get the slingbox app and watch it via 3g/or EDGE.

Id also like to use tethering and do all the other common things jailbreaking brings but right now my priority and main reason for wanting to hack my phone is to be able to use my slingbox...hopefully there is an alternative way to get the app as well after jailbreaking besides the app store.

After that all you need to do is download 3Gunrestrictor from the Cydia store to unrestrict the sling app. Then you can watch your channels over 3G or Edge.

Ok jailbreak a success. One more question.
If I open iTunes will my last backup be deleted? can I save it somehow or do I need too? Will iTunes back up my phone with Cydia? I'd like to save a copy of my phone pre jailbreak if possible...
