Hi,

Seeing as this is my first post ever on this forum, I'll give a little history.

<START RANT> I live in a wonderful country called South Africa. Wonderful except for how expensive Macs are. To put it into perspective: The 2.8 24" iMac cost $1799 in the US. Now using the current exchange rate, that comes out to R13500 (R for Rands). Now we don't have a local apple store, but the local supplier has one. Since they own the rights to apple in SA they have the best prices. So how much do you think the 2.8 24" Costs....?
R20 000!!!
To put things in perspective, I could buy a PS3 AND a xbox 360 with that extra R6500!!! </END RANT>

At work I use a G5 Mac Pro for HDV editing and some basic animation and composition in AE CS3. Its specs are: dual 2 GHz power pc CPUs, 2 gigs of RAM and a ATI 9600 GPU.

I'm looking to buy my first Mac for home, because honestly, going home to a pc from a mac just makes me want to go back to work;):apple::D

I'm considering the bottom of the range iMac (2.4Ghz 20") and upgrading it to 2gigs. Or the Midrange Macbook (2.4 2gigs). They are both the same price in SA (R1300, or $1750).

I'll be using it mostly as a media and internet machine. With the occasional use of Photoshop CS3, After Effects CS3, and some HDV editing with Final Cut Pro. Would it be fairly accurate to say that the iMac would give similar performance in these applications as my G5 at work (see specs above), as it has a faster and more efficient CPU, faster FSB and RAM, and a fairly similar GPU (in terms of raw power)?

Thanks in advance for any advice:)

The iMac is actually faster than the powermac at most of the tasks!

Keep in mind that French wine, German cars, etc. costs more in the US. Product made by a US company will cost more elsewhere. Just the facts of life.

Thanks for the advice:)

The cheapest 24" is R20 000. Which is rather out of my price range (as I could buy a quad GPU PC for that sort of money).

But I think I'll go with the 20" and put an extra gig in.

Now I just have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for them to ship to SA:(
