First time Mac user with 2010 Mini!

So, I took the plunge finally... After being a PC user for my whole life, I decided to try out using a Mac... It started using it through a VM, which I found to be a little bit clunky... So I went ahead and bought a Mini...

So far - LOVE IT... Been playing with it for a few days, and relearning how to use everything... Keep wanting to hit Control for the shortcut keys - Taking a little getitng used to hitting Command And I was a frequent user of Shift+Home to highlight all text on a line, which I have found doesn't work in all programs... iChat to name one.

Application-wise, everything is great! Love the ease of installing and uninstalling applications. Overall, everything works great. Tried out Parallels and that works pretty awesome as well. Love the Cohesive mode. Everything is just... Easy...

Just bought the base model, and swapped the ram from my laptop into the Mini so now I am running 4GB ram... Ordered a 320GB 7200 RPM hard drive which should arrive next week, and I will tackle installing that, but am looking forward to it... Everything seems much faster after upgrading the ram, and is definitely a must for a quick machine it seems!

Surprisingly, haven't run into any huge issues that I can speak of - Wish iChat allowed multiple accounts in the same window... But I'm pretty happy that that's the only 'issue' that I am experiencing. Am hoping that with Safari 5, AdBlock Plus will be created as an Add-On, as I miss that from Firefox on my PC. Also wish there was some way for Mail.app to be able to push emails through even when closed... Obviously a silly request, but notifications must somehow be possible, since Outlook 2011 gives me Calendar notifications when it's closed. But again, small issues The maximize button in windows threw me for a loop when I clicked on it and it didn't maximize to full screen, but as I understand it, it maximizes to what it thinks is the best size for the application you are running... Which works for me.

Anyways, I'll end this thread... Just wanted to post my experiences that I have had so far, for any possible PC users that are considering getting a Mac Mini - I highly recommend it!

Glad you like it.

You might want to try Adium for the multiple chat accounts. I'm sure there are others out there, but I prefer Adium. Video chat won't work with it, but it supports most, if not all the major chat services.

You could get firefox for your mac as well. That's what I use primarily and it works very similarly to firefox on a PC.

I bought an original 1.25 mini in 2005. It's changed hands twice, but is still in service. I've bought two Intel ones since then, and both of them are still in heavy use too. Fantastic machines.

I just today bought one of the new servers, and it's screaming fast as a desktop. I imagine this one will be with me a long time too.

i'm planning to get one too but since i'm a noob,can i install the client version there with no problem? i just wanna get the server version for the dual 500GB hard disc and faster CPU which comes cheaper than if i get the base version then customise it...

That's why I wanted it too. The hard drive space was the big thing. The RAM capacity too; my iMac was limited to 4GB, but this can go up to 8, which is a big one for me. Chaining the hard drives into a RAID 0 array really makes it rock. As long as there's a current backup around, of course.

Unfortunately, you cannot install the client OS on it from a retail disk without quite a bit of hacking and even then, there are issues (I've heard that the SD card reader can't be made to work in that configuration) UNLESS you have access to a regular mini's restore discs. Those, apparently, work just fine.

However, you can use the server OS that comes with it as a desktop OS; it's really just the client OS with a bunch of extras added (which you don't have to turn on if you don't want to). The only thing it's missing is iLife.
