Hello all!

I’ve been backing up my Mac to a Mac mini Time Machine server over the past two days; I started from scratch and it had 2.3TB of data to back up to a 4.5TB drive.

Three days in, and now it says “Backed up: 3.11TB” and it’s growing. I stopped the back up, started it again, restarted the Mac Mini server and restarted the Mac, and it just picks up right where it left off.

If it keeps going like this, the drive is going to fill up by tomorrow! With far more data than I actually have...

I can’t find much info on this online, or any solution. Any advice for what I should do?

Thanks!

Time Machine sometimes overestimates the size of the backup to be made. You won't know the true size until it is finished.

Due to TM issues - corruption, hangs, etc. it should only be one backup in a 3-2-1 backup strategy. Most folks recommend at least one clone, such as those made by Carbon Copy Cloner.

I went and checked the drive on my server and sure it enough, it was up to 3.9TB of data. (Even though my Mac physically only has 2.5TB of storage). I’ve deleted the bundle and going to try again...

Will definitely look into CCC in the future!
