I am thinking about joining Planet Fitness. Wondering if there are any apps for the iPhone that are suited for the circuit equipment that they use.

Looking for something that is like a personal coach similar to some of the running apps. Want the audio coaching.
"go to this equipment set to this weight and do this many reps."

You get the idea. In the past when I have tried similar places I have worked out kind of random. Need something to keep me focused.

There's an app for that. :D

Planet Fitness has their own app. Just go to the app store and enter Planet Fitness into the search window, and presto up comes their app.

Most people don't like it though.

I saw that one but it is really just a goofy app. It has no workout coaching part to it.

Which Planet Fitness? We go to the one here in North Dallas, but do not use the fitness app.
Usually my wife will use her app, not sure which, but it lets her keep track of what she does such as running, eliptical, etc. and how long.
There are a few apps out there you can use, but seem that you'll have to do them manually.

You have two options.

1.) Get a personal trainer. No app is going to do what you want (especially telling you what weight to set).

2.) Research weight training and get a fitness app that will track your workouts.

If you want to learn on your own, a great place to start is Weight Training Guidelines. This will give you some of the basics of how to weight train properly, as well as links to workout templates & exercises.

iFitness is a great app for picking exercises. They have a large selection of exercises with instructions, pictures and often videos of how to perform them correctly. It also has a bunch of preset workouts for major muscle groups. For tracking workouts, I don't like it so much.

EDIT (some tips):

To determine how much weight you should start doing an exercise with, choose enough weight that you are just able to complete the target number of reps. But, for your first two weeks of weight training, don't push yourself that hard. You should be able to complete the set without struggling very much. If you are not used to working out and you push yourself too early, you are going to strain your muscles and you won't be able to move very well.

I would recommend calorie tracker from livestrong.com

I was 180 and got down to 171 in a few weeks just by tracking my intake and trying to stay under my daily maximum. You become a lot more aware of just how many that morning danish and coffee add to your total count. The app has thousands of entries from McDonald's to Trader Joe's.

There is also an exercise log, but I think many excercise logs are innacurare since they can't measure heartrate/intensity so it's best to just input how many calories you burned on a machine

I am up here in RI. I have been running on a local bike path, but when it snows it is not plowed and takes me out of the routine. There is a cool Couch to 5k app that is I use on that which prompts when to walk, run, cool down etc. Looking for something like that.

I think eventually someone will come up with an app like I am thinking, but I guess there is not one out there at this time. I will take a look at your suggestions.

Appreciate the response from all.

Had looked at the Mens Health app that is in the app store, liked that it had a golf specific workout which was nice, not sure how the rest of the app is, might take a chance for $4.

I've tried fitness apps in the gym and they become a pain in the arse as your phone has to keep coming out of your pocket/band to input/look at info

As mentioned above stuff like 0-5k (Nike+) is good, 100 push ups is also a good app

^^ This. I use Lose It and their site at loseit.com and have dropped 8lbs just paying attention to my diet more.

If you're into working out and in decent shape get a copy of P90X. It will kick your ass but it works.

RunKeeper Pro has some coaching factors in it, check it out. It's free until January 31, it is usually a $10 app.
I downloaded the RunKeeper Pro when I saw it was free. Have not had a chance to try it yet.

Appreciate all the suggestions. Now I just need to join the gym and GO.

Personally i just use iFitness. You need to draw up your own weights program but it's not difficult considering there are thousands of free ones online to choose from. Start off with a weight you are comfortable with, and start to build up the reps and weight week to week.

For some reason I was not able to find the app when I searched the other day. Will try again, may have been a glitch.
